Employability and Enterprise

This month found me at Swansea University again delivering SimVenture Evolution training to staff who work in the Employability Department in The College of Arts and Humanities.

Staff there do an amazing job of introducing students to the theory and practice of setting up and running a small enterprise.  Alongside the theory and practice of small business development, they also look at ideas about #enterprise and #entrepreneurship, including the ‘entrepreneurial mindset’ and how this can be applied in a range of contexts to enhance lifelong #employability.

Part of the module includes the use of #SimVentureEvolution where students work in teams to experience the ups and downs of running a small business. They then have an assessment which requires them to reflect on the experience and evaluate the development of their #employability skills.

Working with young people to develop their employability skills is a passion of mine because students rarely understand what skills they have and how to evidence them especially in job interviews.

To accelerate the development of young peoples’ skills myself, #Julian Gee, #Jo Ibbott and #Katherine Smith founded a community interest company called #‘Limitless’. Limitless was set up because education policy seems to be forcing many schools and colleges to work in the opposite direction, effectively becoming ‘GCSE factories’! We believe there is a need to offer young people a place to go to acquire those all-important ‘life skills’ and help them gain #confidence, poise and #self-assurance including the development of their soft skills and #employability skills.
