I was proud to part of The UCL Apprentice” event last week at Plexal.
Plexal is Europe’s largest innovation hub, based on the 1.2 million square-foot former London Olympics Press & Broadcast centre.
The event was organised by Dr Jeffrey Pittaway and his team from University College London. The challenge for the teams of students was to integrate their Communications, Consumer and Market Research, Business Intelligence, Information Technology, Organisational Behaviour, and Project and General Management knowledge from all of their courses.
They then had to apply that knowledge to make decisions on marketing strategy and pricing, sales, operations, and R&D using a leading cloud-based business simulation platform. The simulation we used is called SimVenture Evolution.
160 first-year students competed to be one of the most profitable teams as the live business simulation progresses through time (10 years). Four teams progressed to the final challenge to win it all for the best presentation before a live panel of experts. The invited audience included real innovative companies searching for talent, such as BT Sport, Studio Wayne McGregor, Ford, and creative and tech entrepreneurs!
My colleague Juliet Tomlinson and I taught the students how to use the simulation using core activity skills, one-page case studies we’ve written for the simulation and lots of hands-on experiential learning activities. Then they were left to work out a strategy for global domination!
I also want to mention to staff on reception who were absolutely fantastic and made our visit even more pleasurable. Always happy to help and on hand all the time. Well done guys, excellent job.
