How Young People are Benefiting from Mentoring

I am very proud to be associated with EBP South as a mentor for young people in the Southampton area. EBP South brings business and education together and inspires and prepares local young people for the world of work. They deliver a range of exciting and motivating work-related learning programmes in schools across the Solent Region, all designed to prepare young people for life after school.

The relationship between mentor and mentee is focused on the need to enable and empower a young person to be motivated to take charge of their own development through developing their confidence and reliance and by carefully posing questions that get them thinking about their future.

Mentoring enables young people to decide for themselves what their goals and aspirations are, and to help them recognise and support them in putting in place the actions they need to take to achieve those goals.

Local businesses – large and small – are key partners and now my organisation Lesley Strachan Consulting & Training is involved with this great work. I work with EBP to ensure that the activities and events are relevant and up to date, providing exciting experiences to motivate young people.

My role as a mentor is to:

  • Inspire positive career aspirations with my mentees
  • Help young people understand the relevance of their classroom learning
  • Increase employability – especially by developing the softer skills that are in such high demand
  • Learning through doing – hands on activities to bring the world of work to life

I am using The Jack Canfield Success Principles Methodology with students to guide young people towards discovering their life purpose, prioritise their goals, and discover the proven steps to achieving anything they want. They will get clear on what they really want from life and create an action plan and the support system they need to make it all happen, plus they’ll have loads of fun as well.

I’ve been working with one young lady at a Southampton School who wanted a mentor to help her focus on her career options. We started by having a chat about what she did, and didn’t want in her life and I asked her to grab some visual images of what she wanted from life.

She’s now made a mood board which she’s hung in her bedroom to inspire her. Last week I said to her “Pretend you’re 25 and we’ve just met again. Tell me about what’s happened since you were 14!” Suddenly, her face lit up and she described the kind of life she wanted. It was such a joy for me to see her light up. The aim over the next few months is to work backwards to find out what subjects and courses she could be choosing before she applies to go to college.

This young lady is so pleased because she feels that her choices of subject will give her the inspiration to study hard and achieve great things. If only all our young people has this kind of support.

The experience and transformations of the young people that I work with have been truly profound. If you’d like to meet me in person and work with me to experience amazing breakthroughs in your life, please contact me.

Apart from my role with EBP coaching is available either on a regular basis or on an ad-hoc basis. We come to the school and work with groups of up to 25 in practical interactive workshops where we also have a huge amount of fun. We work with you to design a specific programme for your teachers, parents and students and this can be delivered in one-hour workshops over a period, or in a half, or full day of training. How about a workshop on an Inset day as well? Private coaching is also available for parents and carers, please ask me for more details.
