How to become part of an Enterprise Adviser Network

Coaching For Colleges

I feel very proud to be have become an Enterprise Adviser for a project run by The Careers and Enterprise Company – Solent Local Enterprise Partnership.

The Solent LEP is led by the business community and supported by three university partners, the further education sector, three unitary authorities, eight district councils, one county council and the voluntary and community sector – all working together to secure a more prosperous and sustainable future for the Solent area.

With a population of more than 1.3 million and over 50,000 businesses, the Solent area is an internationally-recognised key economic hub anchored around the Isle of Wight, the two cities of Portsmouth and Southampton, the M27 corridor and the Solent waterway.

There is an optimism that local growth is in the right parts of the economy, including advanced engineering, marine & maritime and aerospace sectors within the SME community. However, vacancies, including Apprenticeships, are becoming increasingly difficult to fill and employers are ‘just about managing’ to find the skills they need.

The pipeline of skills remains a cause for concern, with parts of the Solent continuing to show significant gaps in educational attainment. These gaps raise concerns about the area’s ability to meet future skills demands.

In 2013/14 pupils who achieved five or more GCSEs at grades A*-C including Maths and English remains significantly below the regional and national averages of 56.1% and 58.2% respectively in the Isle of Wight (44.6%), Southampton (49.8%) and Portsmouth (50.2%).

With these challenges in mind, the Solent LEP has identified three key issues to be given prominence over the coming year:

Driving higher level skills, and building participation in higher education

Continuing to place an emphasis on building STEM skills

Seeking a devolution of skills budgets for the Solent to maximise the flexibility and effective targeting of resources

The Solent LEP are also seeking to actively engage the wider community, particularly employers, to secure a genuine tri-partite approach to the development of skills for residents of the region and the wider economy.

Summary of local project

The Solent LEP is working with over 25 schools from across the Solent area and partnering these with 25 Enterprise Advisers. These schools were selected from the identified ‘cold spots’ and predominately focus around the areas of limited employer engagement and low socio-economic status.

The Enterprise Coordinator will be working from within the Solent LEP and their main role is to:

  • Help schools and colleges to improve their careers and enterprise activities and to engage with the world of work
  • Make it easier for employers and the self-employed to engage with schools and colleges
  • Focus everyone’s efforts on programmes and activities that are most effective in motivating young people, supporting independent choice, and supporting positive outcomes for young people

Volunteer Enterprise Advisers will be recruited from local businesses and organisations and be working at a strategic level alongside the schools’ senior management teams. The aim of these partnerships is to evaluate the existing programme of enterprise activity in the schools and my role is to develop activity plans to ensure that the best local careers and enterprise provision can be accessed.

Using local Labour Market Information, the Enterprise Advisers will be able to identify skills gaps within the Solent region to help shape the delivery of enterprise activity in schools. The aim is to build sustainable partnerships which can be adapted and improved upon during the length of the project and beyond.
