Intention is a powerful force. Fueled by imagination, it brings to life the dreams of champion athletes and best-selling authors alike.
Tara Lipinski was just six years old when she decided to be a figure skater while watching the Olympics on TV. When her mother saw Tara standing on a chair and asked what she was doing, the future champion replied, “I’m standing on the podium at the Olympics receiving my gold medal.”
For years’ college students Jim Nantz and Fred Couples role-played the same scene: greeting each other in Butler Cabin at the Masters Golf Tournament for the awarding of the championship green sports coat. Every Saturday Nantz, the would-be sports reporter, interviewed Couples, the would-be golf champion. Several years later the scene played out for real.
Jack had not written a single word of his first book when he walked into a party pretending to be a best-selling author, fake books in hand. Since then over 100 million Chicken Soup for the Soul books have sold.

The human brain has this amazing tool called the reticular activating system. It operates full-time to let in the information appropriate to our current intentions.
When you’re driving and feeling hungry, for instance, what do you notice? All those fast-food billboards. If you suddenly realize your gas gauge is on empty, your focus changes to finding a gas station.
When you form inspired intentions linked to powerful emotions, the reticular activating system filters out what you don’t need and lets in those resources you do need—the people, ideas, and possibilities. Those resources were there before, but you weren’t seeing or sorting them, because you were focused on fast food, gas stations, or something equally mundane.
Now, however, you see the valuable resources that match your beliefs and align with your goal. You start to perceive opportunities, attract supportive people, and take actions that accelerate your success.
So at Southampton Solent University we’re energizing our dreams by holding a fun exercise called – A Come-As-You’ll-Be-Party on Wednesday 26th October. Invitations will be sent out to “Come as the person you will be ten years from now when you have achieved your goals.”
We’re encouraging people to bring props and to dress as their vision of themselves in ten years.
Then, we’ll be celebrating our successes and spend the time bragging about our accomplishments and talking about how happy we are.
